People ask the question

What’s a Specialist Contractor?

And I tell 'em, it's not about the long hours, apprenticeships or performance bonds, oh no.

There's more there than that my friends.

We all like a bit of good life

Some the final accounts, some the relationships, others the plant, the innovation or the supply chain.

But a Specialist Contractor, oh he's different.

Why?

Because the real Specialist Contractor, wants the absolute lot.

So the opening sequence is totally ripped off from Mark Strong’s iconic monologue in the opening scene of Guy Ritchie’s film, Rock N Rolla, but there is good reason. This blog is intended to be a testament to the Rock n Rolla’s of the construction sector.

So here is to the Specialist Contractors that are continuing the march, many with reduced workforces, reduced wages and reduced time in their week to undertake the truly challenging and technical elements of construction.

With so many Specialists and Employees of Specialist Contractors undertaking multiple functions within their businesses, I truly believe that Specialist Contractors produce the businessmen and businesswomen that can the lead this industry.

Many Specialist Contractors could earn equivalent or better salaries as employees of major contractors or employers, but these sadists stay in the Specialist Contracting industry anyway. Why do we do it? Speaking only for myself, Specialist Contracting provides me the opportunity to feel like we are at the cutting edge of the industry, the creators, the makers, the problem solvers, the trainers, the mentors… we do what others can’t.

So many (too many) Specialist Contractors put problem solving ahead of checking their own contract, on a daily basis. I cannot count how many times I have spoken with Specialists that have started solving problems , that might not even be their own, before they have served the relevant notices under their contracts, potentially precluding them from time and cost recovery. It is these Specialists that keep the industry not just going round, but moving forward, it is these Specialists that I want to serve.

In a world where big business is preserving itself, Specialist Contractors will move diligently on, continuing to bid and win work on ever decreasing margins and securing the future of the industry through continued traineeships, apprenticeships and supply chain management. I look forward to working with the Specialist Contracting sector through whatever the rest of 2020 and beyond can throw at us.

So Specialists, please make use of my blogs and the free resources on my website, I produce them as a way of giving back to the Specialist sector. I am open to suggestions of other free resources and content that I could provide on my website, if you can think of anything, you want to see, let me know using the "Get in Touch" button in the header.

Specialist Contractors are the movers and shakers of the industry and I for one am proud to look up to many of the real Rock n Rolla’s of this industry.

For any Specialists out there that want to discuss their businesses further with me or are interested in collaboration, innovation or starting new relationships, drop me an email, I am always interested.
